If your spouse or partner is arguing with his or her parents, do you get involved or do you stay out? That is the question the Austrian newspaper Der Standard asked its readers in the week before Valentine's Day. Read the article, read some of the readers' answers, and pick up some useful German phrases for talking about relationships.
Every week we pick a German article from the web, select a handful of useful sentences, and help you remember them for ever.

do you tackle the subject or do you stay out of it?
to listen to your partner when they gossip about their parents
to hold yourself back
it could be something like this
when the partner argues with the parents
there is a strained relationship
but it's not that easy
to offer some well-intentioned advice
to mend a broken relationship
to defuse a conflict
I wouldn't bring up the subject in front of your mom
down to the smallest detail
should you get involved?
one is happy about the good relationship
but you also need air to catch your breath
how do you handle the situation?
do you get involved or do you stay out of it?
what experiences have you made?
